Self Concept and Coping Behavior of Nursing Students

Abstract
This study was designed to identify the relationship between self concept and coping behavior of nursing students.
The purpose of this study were as follows
1. To explore self concept and coping behavior of nursing students.
2. To test the significant difference in self concept and coping behavior in relation to general characteristics.
3. To investigate the relationship between self concept and coping behavior.
The subjects of this study were 194 nursing students. The data were collected during the period from Oct. 25, to Nov. 4, 1996.
The instruments for this study were the Self Concept Scale developed by Rosenberg and Chunghun Choi and the Coping Method Scale developed by Jalowiec & Powers The results of the study were follows :
1. The mean score for the level of self concept was 3.69.
2. The mean score for the coping behavior was 2.91
Nursing students rated problem-oriented coping method significantly higher in degree of use than affective-oriented coping method.
3. General characteristics related to the level of self concept were significantly different in the type of religion(t=2.22, p<.05), the degree of satisfaction in major subjects (F=8.412 , p<.001), and the degree of satisfaction in college life(F=13.015, p<.001)
4. General characteristics related to coping behavior were significantly different in the type of religion (t=2.88, p<.05).
5. The relation between self concept and coping behavior was positively correlated (r=.2774, p<.001).
